History of massage therapy

The history of massage goes back a long way and is one of the oldest healing arts known to mankind. Here are some interesting facts:

Origin of massage:

Massage probably originated in China and Egypt. As early as 2700 BC, massages were described in China as one of the four classic medical treatments in Chinese medicine.

In India, massage was already part of Ayurvedic medicine about 5,000 years ago.

Ancient and Greek influences:

The Greek physician Hippocrates (ca. 460–370 BC) brought the knowledge of massage to Europe and described it as the “art of stroking”.

Galen, another ancient Greek physician, also contributed to the spread of massage practices. He already distinguished 18 different types of massage.

Roman period and Middle Ages:

In the Roman Empire, gladiators were massaged before and after fights.

Julius Caesar used massages to treat his headaches.

In the Middle Ages, massage advocates had a hard time because the church viewed massages as something supernatural and devilish.
